NIGERIANS SEEK JUSTICE FOR KILLED BRIDGET AGBAHIME (74YRS)
Bridget Agbahime 74 years old wife of a Deeper Life Bible
Church in Kano Pastor lost her life to a mere disagreement with some traders
where she sells plastic wares. Is no more news that she was killed for an alleged
blasphemy against Mohammed in a market in Kano northern Nigeria. But to people
who knew her vehemently said, she is not capable of doing. In their words,
Bridget is a decent woman, that respects people and having spent most of her
life in the north, cannot say anything against Islam or its prophet.
As shocking as it may appear, a court in Nigeria northern city
of Kano have set free the five men held in connection to the killing of the
pastors wife. The freed men are Zabairu Abubakar, Abdulahi Abubakar, Dauda
Ahmed, Abdulmumeen Mustafa and Musa Abdulahi. The order of Kano state Attorney
General and Commissioner for Justice that the five men had no case to answer
after reviewing the facts from the police file in accordance with section 130
and 150 of the criminal procedure code and a legal advice led to the discharge
of the five suspect and pronouncement of innocent of any wrong doing.
Kano the largest city in mainly Moslem northern Nigeria,
often witnessed widespread violence against minority Christian and churches. The Christian Ass0ciation of Nigeria (CAN)
condemnation of her killing and call of justice for Bridget has been dashed
with this latest ruling of innocent to her alleged killers.
Nigeria President described her killing through his Special
Adviser on Media and Publicity as “Sad and Regrettable”, yet the five men were
left off the hook. The speaker of the house of Representatives Yakubu Dogara a Christian,
said “it was grievous act of lawlessness and impunity” “rule of law must
prevail”.
There have been killings in Niger State where a man named
Methodus Chimaije Emmanuel was attacked and killed for purportedly posting
blasphemous statement on social media against Mohammed. Three people and a
police officer also were killed with churches, houses burnt and 25 shops
looted.
These religious motivated violence were condemned by the
Jama”atu Nasri Islam, the highest body of Islam led by the Sultan of Sokoto
Muhammadu Sa”ad Abubakar. The body called for the protection of the Citizenry
as it is the premise of the government legitimacy under Nigeria constitution.
As at the time of filling this report. Is not clear if an
appeal will be made against the ruling in Kano. Nigeria which many see as a
Secular nation is in the eye of the world to see if there will be Justice for
slain Bridget Agbahime. It will not be out of order to call on our law makers
to look into our existence as one NIGERIA and condemn the act of hiding under
religion to kill people of different fate. People must account for their crimes
against humanity. Religious leaders must educate and enlighten followers on the
basis of their religion which is LOVE and not HATE.
